It has come to my attention that a Senior Academy student posted an offensive, inappropriate and discriminatory post on social media. First, I want to say that I am deeply saddened and disappointed. I appreciate every student and parent that has brought awareness to this issue and as such, we have already begun the follow-up with the family. I want to reassure this community that we have high expectations for our parents, staff, and our students. There should be a clear understanding that this is not a community that will stand by and condone discrimination, racism, systematic oppression, and/or institutional racism. It is our responsibility to hold every member of our community accountable and respond immediately and appropriately.
I express this in all transparency but want to be clear that due to the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) the school cannot share with anyone the details, specifics, consequences of an incident with anyone other than the offending party in any situation.
While some of these incidents may be met with restorative practices, education, and corrective requirements or policies, it is important to understand that certain actions will not be tolerated. Drew administrators and staff will take all appropriate steps to eradicate actions that threaten the safety and security of the people in our community.
Please reach out to me with any concerns or further questions.
“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it…” – Muhammad Ali
In this time of hurt, sorrow and anger, I encourage this community to throw away impossible and seek the change we wish to see. I encourage families of this community and every surrounding community to embrace each other, hold each other accountable, and stand up for change. In this time, it is even more salient that we cannot ignore systematic oppression, we cannot ignore institutional racism. I know that there are so many hurt and so many confused and/or conflicted as am I. Our job as adults is to reflect, learn, grow, act and guide or get out of the way. My everyday wish is that as much as you cry as much as you may be saddened – you find strength to remain encouraged, you remain engaged, knowing that you and your surrounding support system will always be a part of change.
Understanding that our community needs a voice and a listening ear, we are offering two listening sessions. Please see the link below for a student listening session that we will hold Wednesday afternoon, 6/3/20, at 12pm for students and another that we will hold Thursday afternoon, 6/4/20, at 12pm for parents.
Attached, you will find a copy of the AP summer reading list for students who selected an AP course for school year 2020-2021. The counselors have sent out an email to all those students who will need to complete the summer reading before the start of school in July. If your child selected to take an AP course and did not receive an email, please contact your child’s counselor.
In the interest of best serving our community, Drew has moved forward with Flynn O’Hara as our new uniform vendor. Thank you to Dr. Allen for all of her work to find a company to best serve our community. Please see the flyer and link below for more information:

Drew Opportunity Fund: First Initiative
Last school year, Drew Charter launched its inaugural annual fund campaign, the Drew Opportunity Fund, in honor of our retiring Head of School Don Doran. As this is a new initiative for Drew, please encourage others to participate, feel free to share ideas for support, and join me in making a donation to this year’s campaign if you haven’t already. The more we raise, the more we can do!
Students and parents requested to participate in summer school should already have communication:
Please reach out to Kendrick Myers, Rachel Weaver, or Tameka Allen if you feel you should have received communication and have not as of today.
Please be advised that our School Norms still apply in our E-Learning Environments.

Announcements
Dear Drew Parents/Guardians:
Thank you for another amazing week of E-learning before Spring Break. I hope that last week provided our students with time to rest, engage with friends, and spend time with family. We truly appreciate your consistent support and feedback. We are looking forward to an amazing week and finishing this semester out strong! Again, thanks for all your continued support! – K. Myers
I recognize that this is a difficult time for parents and students. The level of uncertainty is troubling and at times can feel overwhelming. I encourage you to contact our counselors if you or your student need support.
You can also receive support via a free, confidential Crisis Text Line, with trained Crisis Counselors, by texting SHARE to 741741. (This is a national resource that is available 24/7).
Drew Opportunity Fund: First Initiative
Last school year, Drew Charter launched its inaugural annual fund campaign, the Drew Opportunity Fund, in honor of our retiring Head of School Don Doran. Under Mr. Doran’s leadership Drew students had myriad opportunities to innovate, achieve, travel and compete, all of which help to close the opportunity gap and make Drew an exemplary learning community.
As this is a new initiative for Drew, please encourage others to participate, feel free to share ideas for support, and join me in making a donation to this year’s campaign if you haven’t already. The more we raise, the more we can do!
