[Most recent update as of 07/17/2020]
Good afternoon parents and students.
As you know, we continue to advocate for the health and safety of our students and families. In alignment with the current public health status in Fulton County, the Mayor’s mandate to roll back to Phase 1, and the substantial spread of COVID-19 in the state of Georgia, Drew Charter School will postpone senior photos for the Class of 2021 to a later, safer date.
While we understand that this decision comes with some disappointment, the safety of our students and families is of utmost importance.
We truly look forward to starting the school year soon with you and your student. If you have any questions in the meantime, please reach out to administration or your senior sponsor at the email addresses listed below:

Students will have access to ongoing and consistent virtual social-emotional learning activities, instructional sessions, clubs, and meaningful school spirit events. As you know, we continue to advocate for the health and safety of our students and families. Many of you have received the most recent communication from APS stating:
“In alignment with the current public health status in Fulton County and the substantial spread of COVID-19 in the state of Georgia, Atlanta Public Schools will no longer host the 2020 in-person graduations the week of July 20th. The ceremonies will be postponed to a later safe date.
While we understand that this decision is a disappointment to the Class of 2020 and their loved ones, the safety of our graduates, families and district employees remains a top priority.”
“In the previous announcement we made a note stating: Dates are subject to change should safety conditions prevent the gathering of large events”
Unfortunately, the recent spike in cases of COVID-19 have resulted in the suspension of this previously mentioned event.

Good Afternoon 2020 Graduates and loved ones of 2020 Graduates,
I hope all is well with you during these unprecedented times. We know this has been a challenging few months and not what any of us wanted nor expected. Despite missed moments that are hard to replicate in the virtual world, we have worked diligently to develop new memories and plan events around your senior year – Virtual Spirit Week, Virtual Senior Walk, Senior Car parade, Virtual Senior Awards Ceremony, and especially your graduation ceremony. Please know that we are doing everything in our power to make your graduation celebration special and memorable for you and your families.
We agree that graduation in itself is a monumental event and that the graduates of 2020 deserve their day. That is why we have allocated resources to join Atlanta Public Schools graduation schedule at the Lakewood Stadium the week of July 20th.
We hope graduates and families will participate in this opportunity to acknowledge and honor their work over their academic journey. With this in mind we must adhere to all guidelines and safety precautions in place. The safety and health of our graduates and their families are the primary motivation in delaying/limiting in-person events of this magnitude. With careful consideration and planning we will see you at 10:00am on July 24th, at the Lakewood Stadium. More information regarding guidelines for attending and other details will be released soon.
With Appreciation,

Last week, we announced a revised 2020 – 2021 Drew Charter school year calendar with a new start date of August 3, 2020, for students. In this follow-up communication regarding Drew’s 2020 – 2021 reopening plan, we are sharing:
Updates regarding reopening models under consideration, and
A Family Survey (The survey link is included here and later in this letter.)
UPDATE TO REOPENING MODELS
At this point, it seems highly unlikely that public health guidance will allow for a traditional Face-to-Face reopening model. Based on current information, Drew is focusing on planning the following two reopening models:
Virtual/e-Learning Model
Hybrid Model (combination of Face-to-Face and Virtual learning)
As we continue building detailed implementation plans for both models, below please find a high-level summary of key components that each model’s plan will address once completed.
All Virtual Model
If Drew reopens under an all virtual model, key components of the model will include:
Instruction – standardized daily student instruction on Zoom for core contents classes and enrichment/pathways including the introduction of new content, academy specific schedules, attendance tracking, and assigning grades
Student Social Emotional and Academic Supports – the incorporation of social emotional learning supports and Special Education, RTI, and Gifted programming
Technology Support – ensuring all students are equipped with necessary devices, internet access, and technical support for success
STEAM/PBL – a re-implementation of and emphasis on STEAM and PBL with student collaboration and projects.
Hybrid Model
If Drew reopens under a Hybrid model, each student would come onsite two days a week for face-to-face instruction and would have virtual instruction (home-based) three days a week. Key components of the Hybrid Model, would include:
Instructional Model Design – two (2) cohorts of students (Cohort A and Cohort B) divided as follows:
Students assigned to Cohort A would report to school on Mondays and Tuesdays and would receive instruction virtually on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays via Google Classroom
Students assigned to Cohort B would report to school on Thursdays and Fridays and would receive instruction virtually on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays via Google Classroom
Siblings would be grouped in the same cohort to ensure on-campus and virtual days are the same
Onsite class sizes would be limited to 12 students per classroom
School Operations – protocols for social distancing (6 feet at all times), cleaning/sanitizing the buildings, morning drop off/afternoon dismissal, meals, classroom design, and transitions
Safety Precautions – protocols for PPE requirements (wearing masks and/or face shields), visitors, early pickup procedures and increased hygiene and safety measures
Health/Wellbeing – protocols for handling student illness, daily screenings/temperature checks and potential outbreaks/quarantine plans
Technology Support – ensuring all students are equipped with devices and technical support to be successful on virtual days
Before and After School Care of Students on Onsite Learning Days – considerations for if/how this care could be provided safely
Offering a full-time virtual learning model for students unable to participate in a Hybrid Model.
FAMILY SURVEY
As we move forward with our planning process, it is critical that we hear from you. Please take the following survey now or no later than Friday, June 26th, at 6pm:
Your input will help us better evaluate how we can support you as we continue planning our reopening. Thank you in advance for participating in the survey.
Please be assured that the reopening model we ultimately implement will focus on ensuring the health and safety of our students and staff in light of the most current public health data and guidance. We will notify you by mid-July of our decision on which reopening model we will implement. In the meantime, please stay safe and healthy.

Updated 06/16/2020: Drew Changes 2020 – 2021 Calendar & School Start Date
Dear Drew Families:
We hope that you are safe and well. As we continue planning our reopening for the upcoming school year, we wanted to notify you of changes to Drew’s school calendar. Yesterday, Drew’s Board of Directors approved a revised 2020-2021 school calendar, including pushing back the first day of school. The first day of school for students has been changed to August 3, 2020. (The original start date was July 27, 2020.) The amended calendar also includes updates to school breaks and holidays.
Please click hereto view the amended 2020-2021 student calendar, and note that the amended calendar dates will be reflected on Drew’s website soon.
Drew Charter School is continuing to evaluate the following three possible 2020-2021 reopening models, which were previously communicated to families:
· Face-to-Face Model
· Hybrid Model (combination of Face-to-Face and Virtual)
· Virtual/e-Learning Model
While the school has not reached a decision regarding which of the three reopening models it will implement, delaying the first day of school provides administrators and staff with essential time to adequately plan for restarting under any of the proposed scenarios, particularly in terms of safety and wellness, operations, instruction, facilities and other critical reopening components. We continue to carefully evaluate the latest federal, state and local reopening guidance and are considering extenuating factors in making our decision.
As our decision has the potential to tremendously impact our families and staff, we hope to provide as much advance notice as possible of the specific reopening model Drew will implement. Please stay tuned for additional updates.
We look forward to embarking on a new year of learning with your student on August 3, 2020!
For the Love of Drew,
Peter McKnight

Drew Opportunity Fund: First Initiative
Last school year, Drew Charter launched its inaugural annual fund campaign, the Drew Opportunity Fund, in honor of our retiring Head of School Don Doran. Under Mr. Doran’s leadership Drew students had myriad opportunities to innovate, achieve, travel and compete, all of which help to close the opportunity gap and make Drew an exemplary learning community.
As this is a new initiative for Drew, please encourage others to participate, feel free to share ideas for support, and join me in making a donation to this year’s campaign if you haven’t already. The more we raise, the more we can do!
