Purpose – Drew Charter School serves as a key component of the cradle-to-college pipeline within the holistic East Lake neighborhood revitalization. Appreciating our unique status as a mixed-income school, Drew Charter School’s primary purpose is to provide an excellent education to all children living in the Villages of East Lake so that each student reaches his or her full potential and is launched on a pathway to health, impact and prosperity.

  • Ms. McGregor, who has joined us as the long-term substitute for Ms. Simmons’ classes (Mr. Vanderplate has moved over to teach Mr. Konieczny’s classes)!

  • Junior Terron Joiner for being selected for the QuestBridge College Prep Scholars Program! He will participate in the Leadership Seminar on Global Issues this summer at the University of Notre Dame.
  • Sophomore Shacari Hardy, who made the All-Region Basketball Team for the 2018-2019 season!
  • Freshman Jamari Aycock for his acceptance into the fully funded, three-year cohort, MS^2 STEM summer program in Andover, MA!”
  • All of the parents, guardians and caregivers who attended the Head of Schools forums to learn about the finalists for this position, including several folks who attended all three!
  • Ms. McKenzie, for her continued leadership of the gifted program this year!
  • Mr. Gaines for populating the great content on the hallway monitors and Mr. Hairston for producing many of the videos featured there!
  • Enrollment Manager, Ms. Hartigan, for her leadership of the re-enrollment process this year!  91% of families complete the re-enrollment process during the prescribed window!
  • Ms. Luster and Ms. White’s Foundations of Engineering class that happened to be presenting their latest projects during the Senior Academy’s first STEAM Pre-Certification Visit last week (see picture above)!

Announcements:

  • SA PTA Parent Gatherings – On March 21st, we hosted our monthly PTA Senior Academy Parent Gathering on the topic of “Restorative Practices.”  These gatherings typically occur every third Thursday of the month, alternating between 8:15 am and 5:00 pm. Our next Gathering will be held on Thursday, April 25th at 5:00 pm.

  • Lottery Application Window for New Students – Applications for new students are open now. If your student has a sibling who is interested in attending Drew, the lottery application window for potential new students is from February 1, 2019 – April 30, 2019. The online application is available on Drew’s website and all qualifying applications will be included in the lottery on May 9th. Please note that the lottery is for potential new students only; all current Drew students will have the opportunity to re-enroll (see below).   • SPACE IS: Shelter – Celebrate your Culture! Calling all parent Volunteers for Space is the New Place and the International Night and Visual Arts Sale, Friday, April 19, 2019. The Theme for this year’s Space is the New Place is “Shelter”; A Celebration utilizing the SPACE of the Yates Campus with artistic presentations demonstrating the STEAM model.  Parent volunteers are needed to assist with bringing food samples from around the world. This is a fund raiser for the Visual Arts Department. We are asking parents to donate ethnic foods complete with small serving plates, forks, decorated tables, flags, etc. to represent the country of origin, set up and organize the food. Dress up in your native garb! If you would like to volunteer to bring food, or contribute your time or talents in any other capacity, please contact Reginald Colbert, Director, Center for the Arts Reginald.colbert@drewcharterschool.org
