Week of December 10th, 2018

Purpose – Drew Charter School serves as a key component of the cradle-to-college pipeline within the holistic East Lake neighborhood revitalization. Appreciating our unique status as a mixed-income school, Drew Charter School’s primary purpose is to provide an excellent education to all children living in the Villages of East Lake so that each student reaches his or her full potential and is launched on a pathway to health, impact and prosperity.

Vision – Drew Charter School students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and passion to create positive change in the world.

Shout-outs to:

  • Senior Kenyetta Akowa for receiving the Questbridge Scholarship to Tufts University!
  • Senior Chris Bass, who was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the International Honor Society of the Two Year College at Atlanta Metropolitan College!
  • Sophomore Hannah Smith, for having her DigitalMandala from last years GAGA course selected by a journal! Her work will be displayed on the front cover of a math journal in March! 
  • The Elementary, Junior and Senior Academies for all “Beating the Odds” by significantly exceeding the state’s predicted CCRPI score, which is based on a school’s demographics, enrollment, and mobility rate!
  • The Elementary, Junior and Senior Academies for all being designated as Title I Distinguished Schools for earning CCRPI scores in the top 5% of Title I schools in the state!
  • Seniors Analisia Anderson and Darshan Desai for representing the Class of 2019 on the Graduation Committee!
  • Ms. Simmons and Ms. Nguyen for their collaboration on the ChemVAS integrated Chemistry/Visual Art class!
  • Ms. McKenzie, Ms. Isbell, and Ms. Weaver for taking time to think through our gifted model!
  • Ms. Hairston and O’Roark for their Harp Holiday Concert on Tuesday!
  • Ms. Williams, Ms. Nguyen, Ms. Luster, and Mr. Baker for a fantastic performance of Lunchroom to both JA and SA students on Wednesday (see picture above)!
  • Mr. Copp, Dr. Pinder, Ms. Holmes-Ferguson and Ms. Weaver for their work around the model for the Learning Lab!
  • Ms. Herman, Mr. Myers, Ms. Hartigan, Ms. Weaver and Ms. Cook for the most well-attended and interactive Prospective Parent Night ever!
  • Ms. I. Jordan for working to get familiar with the SA schedule and dismissal process!
  • Mr. Sessoms for the variety of selections and performance of the JA/SA choruses on Thursday night!
  • Dr. Allen for his hard work supporting our students!
  • Mr. Anderson for his management of the Theater and for A/V help throughout the building!

  • Vacancies – We are currently looking to hire a Special Education Para-Professional and Computer Science teacher for the Senior Academy.  If you know of qualified and interested candidates, please have them email me at peter.mcknight@drewcharterschool.org.
  • SA PTA Parent Gatherings – On November 15th, we hosted our monthly PTA Senior Academy Parent Gathering on the topic of “College Branding.”  These gatherings typically occur every third Thursday of the month, alternating between 8:15 am and 5:00 pm.  There will not be a Gathering in December and so we will pick back up on Thursday January 17th.

    • Do you have a suggestion for a future Parent Gathering topic?  Please email our PTA Vice President, Wanda Ray or please complete this form.
  • Reminder: Lunch Balances – Please take a moment to check your student’s lunch balance at www.MySchoolBucks.com.  Any student who owes money, will need to bring cash to pay for lunch until their balance is cleared.  Outstanding balances can be paid down and money can be added to students’ accounts on this website.  More information is available in this letter.
