Week of April 16th, 2018

Purpose – Drew Charter School serves as a key component of the cradle-to-college pipeline within the holistic East Lake neighborhood revitalization. Appreciating our unique status as a mixed-income school, Drew Charter School’s primary purpose is to provide an excellent education to all children living in the Villages of East Lake so that each student reaches his or her full potential and is launched on a pathway to health, impact and prosperity.

Vision – Drew Charter School students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and passion to create positive change in the world.

Mission – Drew Charter School is an exemplary, innovative education community that empowers all students to achieve their full potential.

Shout-outs to:

  • The Senior Academy for being named to the list of three of the 2018 AP Honor Schools lists:
    • AP Challenge Schools (56 named in 2018) are schools with enrollments of 900 or fewer students and students testing in four of the core areas (English, math, science, and social studies).
    • AP Access and Support Schools (69 named in 2018) are schools with at least 30 percent of AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African-American and/or Hispanic and 30 percent of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher.
    • AP Humanities Schools (134 named in 2018) are schools with students testing in the following AP courses: at least one ELA course, two social sciences courses, one fine arts course and one world language course.
  • Juniors Arthur Ayers, Mauro Espericueta and Daisha Thornton for presenting about their Tiny House Project at the National Association of Arts Educators conference in Seattle!
  • Junior Daisha Thornton, who was accepted to the Governor’s Honors Program for Engineering!
  • Junior orchestra member Autumn Linsey, who earned the Ovation Award for excellence in musicianship and character inside the music classroom, in school, and in the community at the WorldStrides Music Festival in Orlando!
  • Sophomore orchestra member Christopher McCrary, who was recognized by adjudicators out of all the performing groups and earned the Adjudicator’s Award at the WorldStrides Music Festival in Orlando!
  • Ms. White and her students, who were filmed by Georgia Public Broadcasting yesterday to highlight their work for which they earned a $10,000 Tiny Grant from the Governor’s Office of Student Accountability!
  • Senior David Aycock for being student of the semester in his math class at GSU’s Clarkston Campus, the second semester in a row!  Last semester he was recognized for College Algebra and this semester for Precalculus!
  • Freshman Jordan McCrary, who participated in a Black History Oratorical Contest focused on STEM programs at HBCUs!  She placed second against a graduating senior who took the top honor!
  • Mr. Parker and his photo brigade for capturing the essence of women in the Drew Community for the month of March [See here]!  As well as the Senior Walk for the Class of 2018!
  • Ms. Schaffer and Dr. Morgan for providing engaging after school and Saturday tutorials for US History!
  • Mr. Jackson for the senior lunch jam before break!
  • Coach Ricks, Coach Cogdell and the girls and boys tennis teams who finished 3rd and 6th in the area tournament, respectively!  The girls will be headed to the state playoffs again!
  • Ms. Klein for engaging the 9th graders in art infused body biography projects for the novel Purple Hibiscus!
  • Coach Weems for the final home golf match of the season celebrating seniors Evan Flemming and Dawn Williams!  We look forward to your success in the playoffs!

  • Reminder: PTA Parent Gatherings – On Thursday, March 15th we hosted our seventh PTA Senior Academy Parent Gathering.  Thank you to Malik Lee, CFP, of Henssler Financial, for presenting.  For those who were not able to join both a video and audio recording are available.
    • These gatherings occur every third Thursday of the month, alternating between 8:15 am and 5:00 pm.  The next Parent Gathering will be held at 8:15 am on Thursday, April 19th in the Eva Davis Board Room.  The topic will be SUPPORTING OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND THEIR MENTAL HEALTH, (stress, bullying, depression and suicide)  with Dr. Alduan Tartt.
