Week of February 19th, 2018

Purpose – Drew Charter School serves as a key component of the cradle-to-college pipeline within the holistic East Lake neighborhood revitalization. Appreciating our unique status as a mixed-income school, Drew Charter School’s primary purpose is to provide an excellent education to all children living in the Villages of East Lake so that each student reaches his or her full potential and is launched on a pathway to health, impact and prosperity.

Vision – Drew Charter School students are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and passion to create positive change in the world.

Mission – Drew Charter School is an exemplary, innovative education community that empowers all students to achieve their full potential.

Shout-outs to:

  • The varsity boys basketball team, Coach Weems and Coach James for winning their first round game in the state playoffs against Clinch County on Friday!  Their next game will be Wednesday at 6:00 pm at Wilkinson County.
  • The debate team for placing second in the Atlanta Urban Debate League tournament on Saturday [see picture above]!
  • Ms. Luczynski for organizing Take Your Family to School Week!
  • Ms. Harris for the awesome Black History Month T-Shirts!
  • Ms. Weaver (Kaney) and Coach Tracy for organizing the NCAA Night on Monday!
  • Ms. Krachman for the energy around the Math Mentors program, which engages SA students with tutoring JA students!
  • Congrats to Jayla Thrash for a full ride soccer scholarship to Alabama A&M!
  • Shout-Out to Mr. Morrison & Mrs. Simmons for their Agency Rubric implementation. As a result of this rubric, students have made an extra effort to arrive to class on time equipped with all of their materials.
  • Shout Out to Ariel Adams was a standout leader in her Physics class this week.  She was instrumental in assisting the substitute with leading the class.
  • Trinity Mosley for being selected to take part in a YMCA Urban Community Outreach Service Trip to Johannesburg for 10 days this summer!
  • Three seniors (so far) have received the 5 Strong full tuition scholarship: Evan Flemming, Tanesheia Arnold, and Eyshea McCorkle! Tanesheia and Evan will attend Fisk University, and Eyshea will attend Langston University. Congrats to them!
  • Big Shout Out to  Syanne Hurst-Spruill who worked very hard on her graphite bike drawing! She did an amazing job in class and outside of  class completing this assignment. She was very focused and even completed her work despite being very sick. Despite getting checked out early for her sickness, she still retrieved her work to complete at home. Great job Syanne!   • The following students were selected as semi-finalists for the Youth Ambassadors Program through the State Department and will be interviewing soon!

    • Reminder: Inclement Weather Make-up Days – Due to the large amount of inclement weather this year the school calendar has been adjusted to make up for the lost instructional days.  February 19th, 20th and 21st, originally scheduled as Winter Break, will now be regular instructional days.  Please see the original letter here.
    • Reminder: Georgia Parent Survey – The Georgia Parent Survey contains 24 questions and may be completed using personal computers, smartphones or tablets.  All parents should participate in the Georgia Parent Survey because the data will be used as part of the calculation of the School Climate Star Rating.  Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis.

      • Save the date for the 4th Annual Drew PTA Adult Social & Silent Auction Fundraiser!  Saturday, March 24, 2018 from 7:30 – 10:30 p.m.  Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door, but Early Bird Tickets on sale now through February 28 for just $25 at http://www.drewcharterschoolpta.com   Admission price includes appetizers, adult beverages, music, and a silent auction bidder number!  Come out for a great night of fun with our adult Drew community and support our PTA as well!  Drew faculty and staff receive one complimentary admission when you RSVP in advance to the PTA.

    • Reminder: PTA Parent Gatherings – On Thursday, February 15th we hosted our sixth PTA Senior Academy Parent Gathering.  Thank you to Brandi Beavers, K-12 Outreach Representative for the Georgia Student Finance Commission, for presenting.
