Week of January 09th, 2019

Purpose – Drew Charter School serves as a key component of the cradle-to-college pipeline within the holistic East Lake neighborhood revitalization. Appreciating our unique status as a mixed-income school, Drew Charter School’s primary purpose is to provide an excellent education to all children living in the Villages of East Lake so that each student reaches his or her full potential and is launched on a pathway to health, impact and prosperity.

Shout-outs to:

  • The entire Senior Academy for an awesome first semester and for all of the midterms, projects and presentations coordinated the last week of school!
  • Mr. Ryan Martin, who joins us as our Academic Support Paraprofessional in the Learning Lab!
  • Ms. Nicole Krsulic, who will be student teaching with Ms. Klein for 12 weeks this spring!
  • The Senior Academy for having the highest ACT take rate for public schools in the entire state of Georgia!!! THE ENTIRE state!!  Shoutout to the CCR Team for intentional and strategic support and collaboration to achieve this feat!!! 
  • The Class of 2019 for their work applying to colleges!  See the bottom of the Weekly Update to see where our Seniors have committed to attend!
  • Sophomores Alana Cason and Jabari Freeman for being city-wide winners in the PTA Reflections Contest [see more info below]!
  • Benjamin Schaeffer, Aaron DeCarlo, Bryant Triplett, Kameron Cook, Ariyah Jefferson, Raven Jackson, Isabel Crosby, Miles Richardson, Kayla White, Muhammad White, and Benjamin Lucas for all growing 10 or more points on their Winter Reading MAP test!
  • Freshman Marlow Reed, who has become the go to photographer in SA in only his first semester at Drew!  He has provided excellent images at events withoutany of my supervision!
  • Mr. Prince for inviting one of his former students and several other current Spelman students to come in and work with students on applying for scholarships. [See picture above]
  • Mr. Monaco, for his work with students, families and staff designing and making in the MakerSpaces! (He helped me make a prototype Christmas present for my wife!)

Announcements:

  • School Calendar Adjustment – Please note, as the testing schedule for the Atlanta Public School District has changed. May 3rd, which was previously designated as a Parent-Teacher Conference Day, will now be a regular school day. The last Parent-Teacher Conference Day for the school year has been moved to April 26th, meaning April 26th will now be a half-day for students. For full Announcement please visit the School Announcement Tab, also linked here. Spring Semester Student Calendar Holidays/School Closures are listed below: 
    • January 21: Martin Luther King National Holiday – School Closed
    • February 1: Parent/Teacher Conferences – All Academies Dismiss by Noon
    • February 18 – February 22: Winter Break –  School Closed 
      (Note: Designated WINTER BREAK unless makeup for inclement weather is needed.)

  • SA PTA Parent Gatherings – On November 15th, we hosted our monthly PTA Senior Academy Parent Gathering on the topic of “College Branding.”  These gatherings typically occur every third Thursday of the month, alternating between 8:15 am and 5:00 pm.  A Gathering in December was not held so we will pick back up on Thursday January 17th.

  • Reminder: Lunch Balances – Please take a moment to check your student’s lunch balance at www.MySchoolBucks.com.  Any student who owes money, will need to bring cash to pay for lunch until their balance is cleared.  Outstanding balances can be paid down and money can be added to students’ accounts on this website.  More information is available in this letter.
